Visual Acuity Charts & Systems

Optotype projectors are essential equipment for precise visual acuity assessments, enabling clear and organized display of different charts used during ophthalmological and optometric examinations. Fundamental to clinical routine, these systems allow the presentation of optotypes for distance vision, near vision, contrast, binocular tests, astigmatism, pediatric evaluation, and various specialized tests, ensuring greater diagnostic precision and an improved patient experience.

With modern technology, high-definition imaging, and intuitive operation, optotype projectors offer greater agility, comfort, and efficiency in the ophthalmological consultation workflow, making them indispensable tools in offices, clinics, and modern visual health centers.

Visual Acuity Charts and Digital Acuity Systems

Visual acuity testing sets the pace of every refraction lane. Practices present optotypes in three main ways: LCD digital acuity charts that show a full test library on a screen, chart projectors that project optotypes onto a screen across the room, and chart panels for compact rooms, near testing and secondary lanes.

This page brings together the acuity equipment US Ophthalmic offers in the US: Ezer and Luxvision LCD acuity charts, the Gilras GDC-7000 acuity tester, Ezer and Luxvision chart projectors, Luxvision vision chart panels, and the stands and accessories that go with them. US Ophthalmic is a US provider of ophthalmic equipment; we manufacture the Ezer line and back it with an in-house technical department and spare-parts stock. Tell us your lane length and setup and we will recommend a configuration with a quote.

How to choose a visual acuity system

  • Lane length: Measure the distance from the patient's eye to the chart. Digital charts can be calibrated for shorter lanes and mirror setups can lengthen the path; projectors need a set distance to the screen.
  • Digital chart or projector: An LCD chart offers a larger test library, randomized optotypes and easy calibration; a projector is familiar and simple to run.
  • Test library: Check the optotypes (letters, numbers, Tumbling E, Landolt C, pictures) and the binocular, color and contrast tests you need.
  • Phoropter link: If you use a digital phoropter, confirm the chart can be controlled from the same console so the chart changes with the test.
  • Mounting: Decide between wall mount, stand or arm mounting, and check the screen size against your lane length.
  • Service and parts: Ask who services the instrument in the US, how consumables and spare parts are supplied, and what the US warranty covers.

Frequently asked questions

What distance should a visual acuity chart be from the patient? Distance acuity is defined at 20 feet (6 meters). Shorter rooms use a chart calibrated for the actual distance or a mirror to lengthen the path.

Should I choose an LCD acuity chart or a chart projector? LCD charts offer more tests and randomized optotypes and are easy to calibrate for short lanes; projectors are simple and familiar. Either can be paired with a phoropter.

Do you sell refurbished acuity charts? No. US Ophthalmic sells new equipment only. For a lower budget, contact us about open-box availability; open-box units are inspected and function-checked.
