Phoropters & Refractors

Digital and manual refractors remain fundamental tools in ophthalmic practice, enabling precise and efficient refractive evaluations for diverse patient profiles and clinical settings. Manual refractors offer time-tested reliability and direct control during examination, while digital refractors elevate the clinical experience with greater speed, accuracy, automation, and integration with modern diagnostic systems.
Our refractor lineup ranges from robust manual instruments to cutting-edge digital solutions, including models with telerefraction capabilities that allow remote examinations through advanced connectivity. This versatility addresses the needs of modern clinics, mobile units, visual health programs, and space-limited environments, delivering greater flexibility, productivity, and access to high-quality vision care.

Phoropters: Digital and Manual Refractors

A phoropter, also called a refractor, holds the lenses the doctor uses for subjective refraction: it places sphere, cylinder and prism changes in front of the patient's eyes to find the prescription that gives the best corrected vision. Digital phoropters change lenses with motors and are run from a console or tablet; manual phoropters use dials and levers.

This page brings together the phoropters US Ophthalmic offers in the US: Ezer and Luxvision digital refractors, the compact Ezer ETR-770 refraction system, and Ezer and Luxvision manual refractors. US Ophthalmic is a US provider of ophthalmic equipment; we manufacture the Ezer line and back it with an in-house technical department and spare-parts stock. Tell us how your lanes are set up and we will put together a quote.

How to choose a phoropter

  • Digital or manual: A digital phoropter speeds up refraction, stores results and can import autorefractor and lensmeter data. A manual phoropter needs no software or network setup and suits lower-volume lanes, training and backup lanes.
  • Lane integration: Check that the phoropter can work with your autorefractor, lensmeter and acuity chart, so pre-test data loads automatically and the chart changes with the test.
  • Control unit: Digital models are run from a console or tablet; try the interface, because the doctor will use it all day.
  • Room size: Compact refraction systems put the refraction and chart functions in a small footprint, which helps in small rooms and satellite offices.
  • Mounting: Confirm the phoropter fits your refraction unit or arm, and whether you need a counterbalanced arm.
  • Service and parts: Ask who services the instrument in the US, how consumables and spare parts are supplied, and what the US warranty covers.

Frequently asked questions

Is a phoropter the same as a refractor? Yes. Phoropter is the common name and refractor is the technical one; both describe the instrument used for subjective refraction.

Should I choose a digital or a manual phoropter? Digital phoropters suit busy lanes because they change lenses faster and save results; manual phoropters are simple, durable and need no software. Many practices run digital units in the main lanes and keep a manual unit as a backup.

Will a digital phoropter work with my autorefractor and chart? Many models import data from autorefractors and lensmeters and control a digital acuity chart. Tell us what you already have and we will check compatibility before you order.

Do you sell refurbished phoropters? No. US Ophthalmic sells new equipment only. For a lower budget, contact us about open-box availability; open-box units are inspected and function-checked.

How do I get a quote? Request a quote with the models you are considering and how many lanes or rooms you are equipping, and we will come back with configurations, availability and lead times.
