Lensometers: Digital and Manual Lensmeters
A lensometer, also called a lensmeter or focimeter, reads the sphere, cylinder, axis, add and prism of a finished spectacle lens and marks its optical center. Opticians and technicians use it to verify a new pair against the prescription and to read a patient's current glasses at the start of an exam.
This page brings together every lensometer US Ophthalmic offers in the US: digital (automatic) lensmeters from our Ezer line and from Luxvision, and Luxvision manual lensmeters with internal or external reading. US Ophthalmic is a US provider of ophthalmic equipment; we manufacture the Ezer line and back it with an in-house technical department and spare-parts stock. Tell us about your dispensary or lab and we will recommend a model with a quote.
How to choose a lensometer
- Digital or manual: A digital lensmeter reads the lens automatically and displays and prints the result, which speeds up verification and suits staff with less experience. A manual lensmeter has no electronics or software and is preferred by many experienced opticians.
- Progressive lenses: If you verify many progressive lenses, a digital model with a progressive mode that locates the distance and near zones saves time and reduces reading errors.
- PD and UV: Some digital models also measure pupillary distance or check UV transmission; decide whether you need these at the dispensing table.
- Internal or external reading: On a manual lensmeter the power scale is read either inside the eyepiece or on an external dial. Try both if you can; staff tend to have a strong preference.
- Data connection: Confirm a digital lensmeter can send readings to your digital phoropter or EMR, so the current prescription does not have to be typed in.
- Service and parts: Ask who services the instrument in the US, how consumables and spare parts are supplied, and what the US warranty covers.

Frequently asked questions
Is a lensometer the same as a lensmeter? Yes. Lensometer, lensmeter and focimeter are names for the same instrument, which measures the power of a spectacle lens.
Should I buy a digital or a manual lensometer? Digital models are faster and easier for less experienced staff, especially with progressive lenses; manual models are simple and durable. Many practices keep a digital unit at dispensing and a manual unit as a backup.
Do you sell refurbished lensometers? No. US Ophthalmic sells new equipment only. For a lower budget, check our open-box units, which are inspected and function-checked.
How do I get a quote? Request a quote with the models you are considering and how many lanes or rooms you are equipping, and we will come back with configurations, availability and lead times.
