Total Automation for Faster and More Accurate Examinations

The EM-4000 Specular Microscope from Tomey is equipped with the latest technology to meet all user demands. It delivers greater accuracy thanks to Tomey’s new CORE method for cell counting. Unlike conventional devices that rely on an Auto Mode prone to inaccuracies—especially at detecting cell edges—the EM-4000 ensures more precise analysis.
The unit features a larger, vertically adjustable screen for enhanced user comfort, and a new database capable of storing thousands of patient images and data records. It also includes a removable memory chip for secure data backup. Additionally, the EM-4000 supports data and image export to EHR server or standalone computers, enabling seamless integration into modern clinical workflows.

Effortless Precision in Corneal Assessment

The EM-4000 Specular Microscope by Tomey offers fully automated, intuitive operation designed for speed, accuracy, and ease of use. Featuring a touch-screen interface, auto alignment in just 1–2 seconds, and automatic capture of 16 images, it enables seamless and precise endothelial imaging. The device also measures central corneal thickness (CCT) and includes multiple fixation targets. With newly enhanced measurement modes, it achieves analysis times as short as 2.5 seconds per eye, allowing for accurate peripheral evaluations.

Comprehensive Corneal Imaging with Wide Capturing Area

The EM-4000 features a wide capturing area of 0.25 x 0.54 mm, made possible by Tomey's proprietary imaging technology. This enables visualization of the endothelium across a broad corneal region, including central, paracentral, and peripheral zones—essential for detecting clinical changes in different corneal areas. By guiding the patient to fixate on specific light targets, the device can capture images at up to 13 unique points. This multi-point fixation approach significantly improves the likelihood of obtaining clear images even in patients with localized corneal opacities. Additionally, each captured image is marked for precise positional reference, and central corneal thickness (CCT) is measured simultaneously for a more complete assessment.

Endothelial Analysis with the Tomey EM-4000

The EM-4000 delivers a fully automated and detailed analysis of the corneal endothelium, offering critical parameters at a glance. With just one capture, the device measures cell density (CD), average cell area (AVG), standard deviation (SD), and the coefficient of variation (CV), providing a clear overview of endothelial health.
Its advanced analysis tools assess polymegathism (variation in cell size) and pleomorphism (variation in cell shape), detecting early morphological changes that may indicate corneal stress or degeneration. The intuitive user interface visualizes hexagonality (6A) and maps cell size distribution across the corneal surface, making the EM-4000 a reliable partner in pre- and post-operative evaluations.
Whether used for routine screenings or complex diagnostics, the EM-4000 ensures fast, accurate, and reproducible results to support optimal clinical decisions.

Advanced Analysis Modes for Precise Endothelial Evaluation

The Tomey EM-4000 offers a comprehensive suite of analysis methods tailored to meet a wide range of diagnostic needs. Its Trace Method outlines cell borders for detailed evaluation, while the Dark Area Analysis identifies and excludes non-analyzable regions for more precise results. The L-Count Method uses a standardized area to calculate cell density, ensuring consistency across examinations. Additionally, the Core Method focuses on the central region of the endothelium, providing a highly accurate center count ideal for assessing corneal health. These versatile tools enable clinicians to capture, assess, and compare endothelial data with exceptional clarity and reproducibility.

Enhanced Image Accuracy with Dark Area Detection

The Dark Area function in the Tomey EM-4000 Specular Microscope is designed to automatically detect and exclude low-quality or invalid regions within the endothelial image. These dark zones—typically caused by poor illumination, reflections, or out-of-focus areas—are filtered out to ensure that only clearly defined cells are included in the analysis. This enhances the overall accuracy and reliability of cell density and morphology evaluations by eliminating artifacts that could otherwise distort results. As a result, clinicians benefit from more consistent and trustworthy data, even when imaging under challenging conditions.

Standard Dual-View Comparison Mode

The EM-4000 features a standard dual-view display that allows clinicians to easily compare data from both eyes (OS/OD) side-by-side or to evaluate pre- and post-operative results with clarity and precision. This feature enhances diagnostic efficiency and supports more informed decision-making by providing a comprehensive visual comparison of corneal endothelial health across different time points or between eyes.

Follow-Up and Dual-View Comparison

The EM-4000 enables efficient follow-up by allowing side-by-side comparison of examinations across different dates. Users can easily track changes in endothelial cell count, density, and corneal thickness by comparing the same eye over time, or perform cross-eye analysis between right and left eyes. This dual-view capability supports thorough pre- and post-operative assessments, making it ideal for monitoring surgical outcomes and progressive corneal conditions.

Data Management and Export

The EM-4000 offers versatile data handling options with both internal and external capabilities. Examination results can be exported in PDF, JPG, or DICOM formats, ensuring compatibility with various systems and workflows. Additionally, the device features an internal printer for immediate physical copies, supporting seamless documentation and record-keeping.
