Half of US optical practices edge their own lenses. The other half send every job out. That was the finding of INVISION's Brain Squad panel of eyecare business owners and managers in May 2026 — a dead-even 50/50 split — and it is the strongest evidence available that in-office finishing is still a genuine business decision rather than a settled best practice. If you are on the buying side of that decision, the iiNEER lens edger is likely on your shortlist, because it is one of the few units sold as a complete three-machine platform rather than as a single box: the INE-200 edger, the INT-200 tracer and the INB-200 lens blocker.

What follows is the layer underneath both: what each of the three iiNEER machines does in sequence, every specification the manufacturer actually publishes, the three it does not publish, and what putting one on a bench in your practice really involves.

Three machines, one sequence: trace, block, edge
Independent optical lab Laramy-K describes finishing as a short chain of operations: mark the lens, block it, edge it, then assemble it into the frame. Blocking, in its words, means attaching the lens to a block using an adhesive pad to hold it securely during edging. The lens-processing walkthrough published by Optogrid expands the same chain to eight steps — tracing the frame shape, blocking the lens onto a chuck, edging to the frame outline, beveling or grooving for the frame style, drilling or grooving for rimless and semi-rimless mounts, polishing the exposed edge, mounting, and a final inspection against ANSI Z80.1 tolerances.
Almost every buying conversation collapses that chain into one word — "the edger." It is worth resisting that, because two of the three machines you are buying never touch a grinding wheel, and the quality of what comes off the edger is largely decided before the lens gets there. A frame traced inaccurately cannot be rescued by a good edger. A lens blocked off-axis produces a perfectly cut lens in the wrong place.
The INT-200 tracer and the INB-200 lens blocker: the two machines nobody specs
The tracer reads the frame. iiNEER publishes that the INT-200 handles binocular, monocular, pattern and demo-lens tracing in 3D, and scans metal, plastic, optyl and pattern frames in 3D. It uses dual ball bushes for stability, is built for precise tracing of high-curve frames, and can be controlled from the INE-200's own touchscreen rather than only from its own panel.
That 3D claim is the one worth understanding, because it is where a cheap tracer costs you money. Optogrid's account of the failure is specific: a lens edged from a 2D trace for a 6-base frame produces an inconsistent bevel along the temporal edge, where the wrap is steepest — and for those frames, 3D tracing is not optional. If your dispensary sells wrap sunwear or any high-base-curve frame, the tracer, not the edger, is the machine that determines whether those jobs come back.
The blocker centres and holds. A lens blocker's whole job is to fix the lens to a block, on axis and on centre, so the edger cuts the right shape in the right place relative to the optical centre. iiNEER publishes that the INB-200 uses a balanced structural design for stable blocking, has a built-in — that is, non-detachable — blocking arm, locates the lens block centrally using two ball plungers, and lights the layout with a white LED whose brightness can be adjusted. Tailor-made lens blocks are offered as options.
Note what is not in that list, which we return to below: no published dimensions, weight, power draw, connectivity or centration-accuracy figure for either the tracer or the lens blocker. That is normal for this class of machine and it is also exactly the kind of gap a buyer should close in writing before signing.
The INE-200 edger: 12 processing modes, decoded
iiNEER publishes twelve named processing modes for the INE-200. Here is the published list, with what each one is for where an authoritative source defines it — and an honest note where the manufacturer names the mode but does not define it.

Four of the twelve modes are named but not documented. That is not a knock on the machine — most edger manufacturers publish mode names and nothing else — but it does tell you where to spend your demo time. If your lab runs a lot of thick minus lenses in shallow plastic frames, the asymmetry and step-bevel modes are precisely the ones that will decide whether those jobs look right, and they are the ones you cannot evaluate from any published document.

Now the gaps, stated plainly, because they are more useful than the numbers above:
- Drilling is not in the published mode list. Twelve modes are named and none of them is drilling, and no drill unit appears in iiNEER's published INE-200 specification. Rimless drill-mount work needs precision holes typically 2–3 mm in from the edge, entered from both faces so the exit side does not flake (Optogrid). If rimless is a meaningful share of your book, get written confirmation of whether a drill unit is included, optional, or absent — before you buy, not after.
- Wi-Fi and LAN are not in the published INE-200 specification. USB is. The networking story for this system — centralised job management, remote data access, and one tracer feeding multiple edgers through a shared folder — comes from the iiNEER System listing in our own catalog, not from the manufacturer's INE-200 spec sheet. Both can be true; a multi-site buyer should still ask for the network topology in writing.
- No water pump or drainage requirement is published. Wet edgers need a supply and a waste path; dry edgers need extraction. iiNEER's INE-200 page states neither. This is a site-preparation question, and it is the one that most often turns a two-hour install into a two-week one.
What it takes to install: bench, power and footprint
The three numbers that matter for the room, rather than for the job, are 55 kg, roughly 52 × 50 cm of bench area, and 1.5 kVA.
Fifty-five kilograms is a two-person lift and it is more than a typical retail display counter is built to carry with a machine that vibrates. It wants a dedicated, level, rigid bench — a proper lab bench or a reinforced casework run, not a shelf. The 518 × 504 mm footprint is compact for a lab-grade edger, but the published height of 596 mm plus an auto door means you need vertical headroom above it, so an under-cabinet position is usually wrong.
The power specification is genuinely good news for a US practice and it is worth spelling out. "Free voltage, 100–240 V, 50–60 Hz" means the machine accepts standard US 120 V mains directly — no step-down transformer, no 220 V circuit pulled to the lab. At 1.5 kVA it will draw on the order of 12.5 A at 120 V, which is most of a standard 15 A branch circuit on its own. Plan a dedicated circuit for it rather than sharing with a compressor, a frame warmer or the break-room refrigerator.
Running three machines as one system
Per the iiNEER System listing in our catalog, the three units are sold and set up as one integrated platform: Wi-Fi connectivity for centralised job management and remote data access, multiple devices able to operate at once, and — the part that matters for a growing practice — a single tracer able to feed several edgers through a shared folder. For a two-location group, that is the difference between buying two tracers and buying one.
The service model is the other systems-level decision. iiNEER states that it operates a web-based remote-control customer service platform, built to cut maintenance time and reduce the need for physical service visits, and it lists remote-control service among the INE-200's utilities. In practice a remote session means a technician can look at the machine's own screen and push a software update without anyone driving to you — which is worth real money on a machine your dispensary cannot work around when it is down.
Remote support does not replace parts and hands, though, and that is where the supply side matters more than the spec sheet. Where the iiNEER System fits — and where it doesn't
It fits a practice that has decided in-house finishing is strategic rather than experimental. The three-machine architecture, the 20–93 mm size range, glass capability alongside plastic and polycarbonate, and the ability to run several edgers off one tracer all point at a lab that expects to grow, or at a group with more than one dispensary.
It fits less well in two situations. If you run a handful of simple single-vision jobs a week, the machine, the bench, the dedicated circuit and the consumables are all real commitments against a small saving, and the INVISION panel's outsourcing half make a coherent case: one Fargo practice owner on that panel put it as having no interest, preferring staff time to go to direct patient care. And if rimless drill-mount is a large share of your work, resolve the drilling question above before anything else — it is the single specification most likely to disqualify a machine for a particular lab.
Nine things to get in writing before you sign
- Whether a drill unit is included, optional or unavailable — and if optional, whether it can be retrofitted later.
- The network topology: Wi-Fi, LAN or both, and exactly how many edgers one INT-200 can feed.
- Water, waste and extraction requirements, since none are published.
- Dimensions, weight and power for the INT-200 and INB-200, none of which are published either.
- A definition and a live demonstration of the four undocumented modes — mix, asymmetry bevel, asymmetry flat, bevel clipping and semi-step bevel — on your own frames and your own lens materials.
- Coated-lens handling: confirm the chuck holds modern hydrophobic anti-reflective lenses without slipping.
- 3D tracing on the steepest wrap frame you actually sell, not a demo frame.
- Warranty term, what it covers, and where the parts are physically held.
- Wheel life and the replacement path for each of the four wheels.
Every one of those is answerable in a single conversation, and every one of them is cheaper to ask now than to discover in month three.
