What the numbers actually mean for your lane
45° field of view, and what the mosaic function adds
45° is the standard single-capture field for tabletop non-mydriatic cameras, and it is what the EFC-2600 delivers per frame. The unit also offers an automatic mosaic function that stitches several fixation-target captures into one composite image — the product page lists the composite at up to 110°. Two things follow. First, a mosaic is several exposures, not one, so budget the extra seconds per patient when you are planning throughput. Second, a stitched composite is a different artifact from a true single-shot ultra-widefield image; if your workflow depends on widefield in a single capture, this is not that camera, and you should say so out loud during the demo rather than discover it later.
12 MP resolution and the imaging modes you will actually use
Twelve megapixels across a 45° field gives you room to zoom into a region without the image falling apart on screen — which matters more for patient education and for year-over-year comparison than it does for the initial capture. Beyond standard color, the camera does digital red-free imaging with adjustable gray scales, RGB channel filtering, and anterior segment photography. That last one is quietly useful: the same instrument that documents the posterior pole can also document an external finding, so one purchase covers two documentation jobs instead of one.
4.0 mm minimum pupil and 25 mm working distance
The 4.0 mm minimum pupil is the single most operationally important number on the sheet, and it is the one buyers most often skip. It defines the condition under which the camera can work without dilation. If a given patient's undilated pupil does not reach 4.0 mm in your dim exam room, that eye becomes a dilated capture — which is a scheduling and room-design fact, not a defect. Focus range and the compensation lens
Without a compensation lens the camera focuses from −15D to +10D, which covers the overwhelming majority of a general practice's patients. The compensation lens extends that to −30D to −10D or +5D to +30D. If you see a meaningful population of high myopes or aphakic patients, the compensation lens is not an optional nicety, it is part of your configuration — and it belongs on the quote from day one rather than as a follow-up order six weeks after install.
What "fully automatic 3D tracking" changes about your day
The automation stack here — 3D auto-alignment, autofocus, auto-exposure, motorized chinrest, ten internal fixation targets — is the real argument for this instrument, and it is a staffing argument more than an optical one. On a manually aligned camera, image quality tracks operator skill: your best tech gets good pictures and everyone else gets retakes. When alignment, focus and exposure are handled by the instrument, capture becomes a delegable task. That changes who can run the camera on a Saturday, how long training takes for a new hire, and how many retakes cost you lane time.
Two honest caveats. Automation reduces the skill floor for capture; it does not remove the need for someone who can recognize a bad image and take it again. And ten fixation targets are only useful if your staff is taught a repeatable capture protocol — otherwise you get inconsistent framing across visits, which quietly destroys the comparison value of the images you are paying to collect.
Room, table and installation planning
At 38 lb and 282 × 485 × 492 mm, the EFC-2600 is a permanent tabletop instrument, not something that moves between rooms. Plan for it accordingly:
- Table: it needs a stable powered instrument table rated for the weight, with enough depth for the 485 mm footprint plus patient-side clearance. If you are pairing it with another instrument on the same table, measure before you buy.
- Power: the auto-selecting 100–240V supply means no special electrical work, but you still want a dedicated, surge-protected outlet within reach of the table's final position.
- Light control: per the pupil requirement above, the room should be one you can genuinely darken. A camera in a bright hallway alcove will underperform its spec sheet forever.
- Environment: 10–35°C and 30–90% non-condensing humidity rules out unconditioned storage rooms and closets that swing with the seasons.
Image management, DICOM and getting pictures into the chart
The camera outputs JPEG and PNG natively, supports networking, and offers USB 2.0, Ethernet and HDMI interfaces. HDMI is more useful than it sounds — a second display facing the patient turns a capture into a conversation. Ethernet is how the images leave the instrument and reach a server or workstation rather than living on the device.
The one line to read twice: the specification table lists DICOM as optional. If your EHR or image-management pathway depends on DICOM, that is a line item to confirm in writing on your quote — not an assumption. This is the most common avoidable disappointment we see on imaging purchases across every brand: the integration everyone assumed was included turns out to be a separately licensed module, and it surfaces during go-live instead of during procurement.
