How to choose an otoscope
- Illumination type: Fiber-optic illumination carries cool, even light to the tip of the speculum for a shadow-free, glare-reduced view and true color rendering, which is why it is the clinical standard. LED sources add long lamp life and low maintenance. Standard direct-bulb heads cost less but can produce shadows. Match the light source to how demanding your exams are.
- Diagnostic vs. operating head: A diagnostic head with a sealed, closed optical system supports pneumatic otoscopy to assess tympanic-membrane mobility. An operating head opens to admit instruments for cerumen or foreign-body removal under direct vision. What is the difference between a diagnostic and an operating otoscope head? A diagnostic head uses a sealed, closed optical system, which lets you attach a bulb insufflator and perform pneumatic otoscopy to judge how well the eardrum moves.
